Summertime Skin Peels

Skin peels are one of our all-time favourite treatments for many reasons– one being that they can repair, rejuvenate and retexture your skin all year round! We recommend chemical skin peels in the colder months to help restore moisture in the skin and rid of dead cells, but a peel is also a fabulous option for keeping your summer skin glowing.

What is a chemical skin peel?

A skin peel is a resurfacing treatment administered through the use of a chemical solution. This solution, made up of a number of different acids and antioxidants, is applied to the skin followed by hydrating and calming creams during the treatment process. Over the following days post-treatment the skin will begin to lightly peel and shed in places, revealing smoother, more glowing and youthful-looking skin.

Chemical peels have many benefits. A peel will exfoliate your skin’s top layer and stimulate the deeper levels, boosting collagen production and therefore plumping your complexion and reducing wrinkles.

This treatment is excellent for reducing the appearance of scarring, sun damage, age spots and hyperpigmentation. There are various intensity levels of chemical peels;  superficial, medium and deep. The intensity of your peel will determine the results you see, but also the downtime needed and the level of possible irritation during treatment.

Skin peels are a safe and medically sound procedure, however they must always be carried out by a fully qualified practitioner. Here at Elegant, Shikha will always provide a full consultation in order to examine your skin and assess whether a peel is the right option for you.

Can I have a chemical peel in the summer?

As skin peels work to rid of dead skin cells and reveal more radiant skin, it is possible to experience sensitivity after treatment.

Following your chemical peel it is important to protect your skin from the sun, avoiding spending time in direct sunlight for at least 10 days. It is for this reason that skin peels in the summer may be somewhat of a question mark.

The majority of chemical skin peels are indeed safe to have during the summer months, subject to following guidelines. Use an SPF with a physical barrier of at least factor 30 daily to ensure that your skin is protected from harmful UVA and UVB rays, which not only can burn your skin but also progress the effects of skin ageing.

Despite the need for certain precautions, there are fantastic benefits to using a chemical peel during the summer. A peel will increase hyaluronic acid production in the skin– ensuring that your skin remains hydrated and healthy, plus clearing your pores and controlling oil that can sometimes be difficult to manage in the hotter months.

Skin peels will help your skin to appear more flawless and radiant, making it easier to feel comfortable without wearing makeup– because who wants to be sweating off their full coverage foundation all summer?

Do I need to have skin peels regularly?

The beauty of a peel is that it is a quick-fire way to totally transform your skin within the space of just 1 week. If you want beautiful, smooth and glowing skin for a special event, wedding or birthday then this treatment can be used as a one-off to ensure you’re feeling and looking gorgeous. The effects of a peel can last from weeks to months depending on the intensity of your treatment and your skin type.

If you’re looking to tackle a specific skin issue such as acne scarring, it may be recommended to have a series of multiple treatments, but in general chemical peels can be carried out as and when suits you!
